Assamese is an Indo-European language of the Satem branch. It is spoken by about 15 million people in the Indian state of Assam, where it is the official language. It is also spoken in the neighboring states of West Bengal, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. There are some additional speakers in Bangladesh and Bhutan. •See also Indo-Iranian languages.
