Danish (Dansk) is an East Scandinavian language, ultimately descended from Old Norse. Danish is spoken by about 6 million people, mostly in Denmark, but also in far northern Germany. Danish is also spoken the Faroe Islands and Greenland, which are autonomous territories of Denmark. Danish is a compulsory foreign language in the schools of Iceland and the Faroe Islands.
