Kashmiri and Dardic languages

Map of the Kashmiri language and Dardic languages

A number of different languages are spoken in the area of the upper Indus River and Kashmir. This group comprises approximately 27 languages spoken in western Afghanistan, northern Pakistan, and northwestern India, principally the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir. With the exception of Kashmiri, all have relatively few numbers of speakers. These languages are sometimes separately classified as Dardic languages, but this classification is controversial; many linguists aver that these languages belong to the Iranian group of languages. •See also Indo-Iranian languages.
