Kurdish is an Indo-Iranian language spoken by the Kurdish people in Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. There are more speakers in Armenia and Azerbaijan. There are actually three variations of Kurdish, which are not always mutually intelligible: Northern, spoken in Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Syria; Central, spoken in Iraq; and Southern, spoken in Iran—although of course there are significant overlaps. Kurdish speakers in Turkey write the language in a Roman alphabet. Kurdish is sometimes written in Cyrillic script north of Turkey, and speakers in Iraq and Iran write the language in Arabic script. The total number of Kurdish speakers is estimated to be about 13 million, with other estimates running as high as 20 million. •See also Indo-Iranian languages.
