Portuguese is a Romance language that is the official language of Portugal and is spoken by about 10 million people there. The largest number of Portuguese speakers, however, is in Brazil, with over 160 million native speakers. Portuguese is also spoken in various nations and locales around the world that were once Portuguese colonies. There is a significant Portuguese-speaking community in southeastern Massachusetts in the United States.
