Slovenian is a South Slavic language spoken in Slovenia, where it is the national language. It is also spoken by a significant number of people in the Carinthia (Kärnten) and Steiermark (Styria) regions of southwest Austria using the Windisch dialect. Slovene is recognized in Austria as an official regional language. Slovene is also spoken by a small minority in Hungary and a significant number of people in northeastern Italy in the provinces of Trieste and Gorizia near the Slovenian border.
