Personal Assistants and Friendship With AI: How Our Relationship With Gadgets Will Change

by Dan Sullivan

In the early '90s, people first started texting. Just 30 years later, voice assistants, which are built into almost every gadget, are sending messages for us. Over the past year, technology has accelerated even more, bringing us five to seven years closer to the futurological scenarios from the sci-fi movies.

Personal Assistants

Even now, you can simply ask a personal assistant on your smartphone, computer, or speaker to set your alarm clock, play music, open mobile online slots via any browser, and send a message. In the age of the Internet of Things boom, the functionality of artificial intelligence (AI) will only expand. A personal assistant will be able to organize your vacation, contact another person's assistant to plan a joint meeting, or take over household tasks - for example, controlling home appliances. The technology will not only help save time on routine tasks but will also greatly simplify the life of people with disabilities because commands to the assistant can be given by voice.

Friendship with Artificial Intelligence

Friendship with Artificial Intelligence

Modern operating systems sometimes know you better than many flesh-and-blood acquaintances: they already know your interests, and in the future will be able to recognize your emotions. It is not surprising that the scenarios of futuristic movies are increasingly about the relationship (and sometimes real love) between humans and artificial intelligence.

The example is in the Her movie released in 2013. Theodore is a lonely writer who leads a reclusive life after a painful breakup with his girlfriend. He soon learns of a modern development: some kind of operating system that is designed to satisfy the user's every desire. Deciding from nothing to do, he installs the system, which is named Samantha. At first Theodore finds it wild and strange to talk to a voice from the phone, but gradually he becomes so used to Samantha that he can no longer imagine life without her.

Here is an example of friendship with AI in the real world. Windows 11 has a personal assistant, which also has a lot to love. It's built right into Start and adapts to your habits and preferences. And it offers the news and posts you want.

A Single Digital Organism

Another step into the future is the disappearance of boundaries between platforms, hardware and software. All your gadgets will merge into one ecosystem that allows you to switch seamlessly from device to device or manage all your devices with one assistant. You can easily access your own files on all your Windows 11 devices right now, thanks to cloud technology. And soon, Windows 11 users will be able to run Android apps on their PCs. And you won't need to install any extra emulators to do this - just download, run, and it'll be up and running.

Control Without Words

Voice control is only the tip of the technological iceberg. Ever seen superheroes in Hollywood blockbusters activate their equipment with a wave of the hand using a holographic display? This scenario is not so far from reality. Already now, VR and AR glasses and helmets allow you to interact with technology with gestures, and this feature can be used not only in games but also in real life.

For example, Windows 11 supports eye control - with a compatible controller. If we look even further into the future, we will be able to give commands to technology literally with our thoughts. However, gadgets will most likely be directly connected to our brains.

Real-time Prompts

No one is surprised any more by the capabilities of text translators. But what if, when communicating with a foreigner, we would see online subtitles in our own language? Simultaneous interpreting technology already exists, and soon it will move into augmented reality. Just by looking at a person through AR-glasses, we will not only be able to fully communicate with them, regardless of the language, but we will also get a whole profile with useful tips and interesting information. Futurologists predict that it will be possible to upgrade your eyes to this feature, but that's another story.

Encounters in the Meta Universe

Already today we mostly communicate with friends and colleagues online - in messengers or video conferences. This is becoming more and more convenient. Windows 11 has Teams built-in by default, which those who still work remotely will appreciate. But imagine being able to put on virtual reality glasses and see the faces of your companions as if you were sitting in the same room with them, although you are several thousand kilometers away. This feature is now being improved by Meta (formerly Facebook). It's also working on glasses allowing everyone to make a digital world a reality.

Such a futuristic scenario is part of the meta-universe concept that will turn our lives into a hybrid of online and offline.
